The Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) is an emergency supply of petroleum that the US has made, in response the spike of gasoline prices back in 1975. Historically, presidents have tapped in the stockpile to calm oil markets during war or when hurricanes hit oil infrastructure. The reserve holds about 600 million barrels of oil and has enough oil to meet US demand for more than a month.
